Goodbye Bangkok … Hello Chiang Mai!

I had been in Bangkok for a little over a week before I decided that it was time to move on. After a long relaxing day at the pool and hanging out on the hostel’s balcony I wanted to make sure I had one last night that I wouldn’t remember. Chris and Cheryl had moved on up north and Stacy and Carlos had left to go down to the islands in the south. I had made a couple new friends,Matty, Maddy and Rui. We started with food and drinks at a little place somewhere on Sukhumvit Road.

I don’t quite remember how much we drank there. All I know is that I don’t remember taking any of these pictures or having them taken. My shirt reads “Armed and Hammered”. It was and accurate description for the night.

I do remember Maddy, Rui and myself heading off to one of my favorite street side bars were I had made friends with the bartender. Anne, the bartender, was always very friendly and made sure that we always had hassle free fun. She seemed to be the caretaker for the girls that

Bangkok – Soi Cowboy and Nana

Trying to find a dance club on a Sunday night in Bangkok was the only time we failed to find a good party in that city. We went to this really nice club downtown were we were expecting to see tons of people  living it up on the dance floor.

Empty Club

This is the club that we had all to ourselves.

All we found when we got there was an empty club and some DJ playing the normal house music. The club looked like it was ready for 1,000 people to rush the place but Chris, Cheryl and myself were the only customers. Maybe it was too early? We got there around 9pm and waited until 11pm before we realized that no one was coming. We at least had a few top shelf drinks to make the bartenders happy. That was before I decided that I was going to stay for 3 months and my budget was a bit looser. Feeling let down, we had to find some place that was lively and so we headed down to Soi Cowboy. We passed it earlier in the night and saw all the bright flashing signs. Not exactly knowing what was there, we figured we could get some beers and maybe a story to tell.

Soi Cowboy has many, many strip clubs. This place was jammed for one end to the other with ladies and lady boys all

Bangkok – Markets (Suan-Lum and Chatuchak)

Chris, Cheryl and myself were looking for something to do a couple days into our stay in Bangkok. We settled on the idea of the hitting up a couple of the markets to find some souvenirs and clothes. I was in desperate need of flip-flops. I only brought a couple pairs of tennis shoes and my feet were paying the price for it. We went to the weekend market at Chatuchak first. You really don’t know what 35 acres of shops looks like until you see it for yourself. This place was so big that we didn’t even get to see a quarter of the shops. My favorite thing at the market was the food. I think this is where I declared myself to be a food tourist. I couldn’t have cared less about the great little souvenir shops or the discounted knock off clothing booths. I shelled out my 5-10 baht for any piece of finger food I could find. Most of the food was fried but there also lots of fruit stands that offered freshly made smoothies.

After hunting through as many stalls as we could fit in to two hours, we started getting hungry for something more than just finger food. We found a section of the

Bangkok – 1st Night

Finding something to do to occupy your night in Bangkok is really easy to do as I found out. I headed out of the hostel towards Sukhumvit road with a few new friends. We were in the mood for a couple drinks to start the evening so we found a pub that was only a couple blocks away. Looking back I am kind of disappointed that we choose an Irish Pub when we were in the middle of an Asian city. As with all western style places in Thailand, the prices were a bit high but the beer was familiar. I found out later that the local beers, Tiger beer (From Singapore ), Chang and Singha, all were very good and very cheap. After we had a couple beers we were looking for some place good for food. We ended up at one of very few indoor air-conditioned restaurants that I ate at on my trip. The food was up scale Thai food with fresh fish being the main staple. This was my first experience eating something that still had eyes.

After dinner, We hit the streets again looking for another bar. We found a Hookah bar in our lonely planets that was just 10 blocks away. Again, another ex-pat hang out with prices to prove it. They were serving buckets that consisted
